Bipolar Treatment- The Natural Way?

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Unfortunately natural bipolar treatment has not been proven to be very effective. There have been a few studies here and there regarding natural supplements shown to improve bipolar symptoms, and of course there are alway natural science advocates that will propose proper diet and healthy nutrition plays a big role in symptoms and their manifestation.

However, while there is most definitely some basis in truth to a holistic approach for healing bipolar disorder, the long and short of it is, pharmacology is just about the only proven method to work for most of the cases currently undergoing treatment.

Bipolar disorder is a result of a chemical imbalance within your brain, and unfortunately, the most effective method to fix that currently is medication. Bipolar treatment typically consists of therapy, and medications such as anti psychotics and mood stabilizers.

Now that isn’t to say that drugs are always the best medicine for bipolar treatment, as in many cases the medications don’t work either. Many patients suffering from bipolar disorder find the best success at bipolar treatment when they combine a holistic approach with modern pharmacology.

Bipolar treatment can be very effective when combining the correct dose of medication, with things like meditation to help the suffer learn a bit of self discipline. Meditation can also help a bipolar patient learn to relax properly, which can help easy any anxiety their mania may be causing them.

Some bipolar sufferer’s find that moving meditation such as yoga, or tai chi is a wonderful release for them. It helps them to burn off some of they excess energy they may experience, as well learn to focus and center themselves.

Bipolar treatment will vary from patient to patient, as every person is unique. With a bit of experimenting and practice, I have no doubt effective bipolar treatment can be found, and you could be well on your way to a healthy, happy lifestyle.

Bipolar Support- Family and Friends Count!

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Bipolar disorder can be a confusing and emotional roller coaster for those affected with the disorder. Bipolar support is essential, whether it is via family, friends, or support groups and therapy. Having family or friends who surround you with love and understanding can make a world of difference in your behavior and though patterns.

One thing that is common in adults suffering from bipolar disorder is the urge to stop taking your medication during “neutral” periods, because you think that you are cured, or more commonly, you miss the manic highs of your disorder. When you have a strong support system in place, they can help you over come the urge to stop taking your medications, and avoid you experiencing another episode of spiraling out of control.

Another benefit to having bipolar support from your family and friends, is during times of crisis, when depression gets the better of you and you feel suicidal, your family is there to provide comfort and help, and keep you from doing something irreversible.

If you don’t have family or friends supporting you, seek out a support group. I am sure you doctor could recommend several. Bipolar support groups are excellent ways to connect with others suffering just like you, and gives you the opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings without fear of ridicule. You are not alone in this life, and a bipolar support group can help you remember that, and be there for you during hard times.

When you join a bipolar support group, make a commitment. Commit to becoming a regular member and go as often as possible, not just during your dark times. In many cases if you show up during neutral periods when you are feeling good and happy, you can be an inspiration to others suffering from deep sadness. This in turn can inspire you to continue on your road to wellness. Bipolar support is integral to your success in becoming healthy, whether from family or friends or therapy. People are people no matter what, and just feeling that connection can go a long way from digging you out of the dark lonely place you may feel stuck in.

Bipolar Teens- How To Handle It

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Bipolar teens can be unpredictable and volatile to deal with. It is estimated that 7% of victims of bipolar disorder are teenagers. Bipolar teens are typically afflicted in their late teens, although diagnosis has occurred in children as young as 6.

In many cases bipolar teens are mistakenly thought to be suffering from ADHD, due to extreme mood swings being common in both disorders. If you think your teen may be suffering from bipolar disorder you should take them to a doctor immediately.

Some things to look for when trying to assess your teens mental state, are things like increased energy, and lack of sleep for extended periods of time. A lack of focus and concentration, as well as physical agitation. Hyper sexuality is also common among bipolar teens.

During a depressed phase some things you might notice in your teen are loss of energy, over sleeping, moping or persistent sadness, and even suicidal thoughts or attempts. Bipolar teens are typically stuck with the disorder for life, as there is no permanent cure. However with family support, proper diagnosis and treatment, as well as a healthy lifestyle, it is very possible to live a long and happy life.

Some things to keep in mind with bipolar teens is that it is important to create a routine that your whole family sticks to and follows, and keep updated regularly by their teachers and anyone else who is a frequent part of their daily life. Always monitor medications closely and be sure to inform your doctor of any adverse side affects. The problem with some depression medications is that they have been known to trigger suicidal thoughts much more easily in teens than in adults. So alway take threats of suicide seriously, and consider therapy for the whole family.

Bipolar teens can be tough to handle sometimes, so if you can catch bipolar disorder early, then you can be well on your way to proper treatment and relief for your beloved teen. Life was meant to be enjoyed by our children, not fraught with depression and fear.
